In hockey, it’s the region on the hockey rink directly in front of the goaltender between the faceoff circles on each side. Some call it the scoring area… The heavy or high slot signifies the area from the top of the circles, farthest from the goaltender, to the end at the hash marks. The excellence of where the deep one begins is contentious. It’s the defenseman’s responsibility to guard offensive players in the slot, while the offside winger covers offensive players in the deep slot. As the deep one is protected by an offensively minded winger and not a defenseman, forwards will often hover there awaiting a way to move for the net for a scoring opportunity.

In slotted dances, the dance slot is an mythical narrow rectangle along which the follower moves forward and backward with respect to the leader, who’s more or less stationary. Slotted dances include: West Coast Swing, Supreme Swing in Tulsa, and other dances, such as Salsa which may be executed in a slotted style as well. The leader mostly stays in the slot as well, leaving it only to provide way for the follower to pass him. The leader very rarely makes the follower to circle around when passing by. They may go into a rotational figure once the follower happens to come close, but such figures are typically in a tight position and do not change the overall “slot” appearance.
